What is it like? Who attends?
We “daven” the Friday night service, singing as many melodies as we can, and that takes about an hour. In between the first part of the service, called Kabbalat Shabbat, and the second part, Ma’ariv, we break up into groups of two or three and study one short Jewish passage–from the Bible or the Talmud or even a contemporary philosopher. We then regroup for Ma’ariv. Following that, there is kiddush over wine, mozee over bread, a buffet meal, conversation, some singing, Grace after meals (aka Birkat Hamazon). That’s it. Ends at 9:45 pm.
A nice way to spend Friday night in NYC.
COME SCHMOOZE WITH JEWS!!! At no cost to you. About 30 people usually show up, mainly in their 20s and 30s and a few older than that. Many tell me that they like it because of the warm and welcoming and Jewish atmosphere. So, consider joining us. Put September 5 on your calendar now. The E55 St Conservative Synagogue, which houses us, is easy to reach by train, bus, or walking from other midtown locations.
No RSVP’s necessary. Led by Rabbi Judith Hauptman and Student Cantor Josh Gorfinkle
